FIRST CHIROPRACTIC APPOINTMENT COMING UP, AND YOU’RE NOT SURE WHAT TO WEAR?
The short answer – something comfortable!
- Comfortable gym clothes.
- A loose shirt/top that allows easy movement, and can be moved easily to assess your back, elbows or shoulders.
- Shorts or pants that have some stretch and allow easy movement – check if you can easily and comfortably squat down in them.
- Comfortable, flat shoes.
- Going to or coming straight from work? Consider having a change of clothes in the car that you can quickly change into before or after your appointment.

THE LONG ANSWER
Does it matter what top I wear?
- A comfortable T-shirt, gym top, or loose blouse is ideal – something that enables you to move freely, that can be easily moved out of the way and without you feeling too exposed if your chiropractor needs to assess your back, shoulders or elbows.
Can I wear jeans?
- You can wear jeans, but you will most likely feel more comfortable in pants with some stretch, such as yoga pants, leggings, or exercise shorts. Look for pants that enable you to bring your knees towards your chest easily, without you feeling limited in the movement or too exposed. Jeans that are very tight or have no stretch should probably not be worn as they can limit your movement or assessment and treatment of the area of complaint.
What about a skirt or dress?
- You will most likely feel more comfortable in pants or shorts. Your chiropractor will ask you to lie on the chiropractic table for parts of the assessment and treatments, often moving from lying on your front to lying on your back, sometimes asking you to move your legs or perform certain movements such as lunges and squats. Wearing skirts or dresses may make you feel more exposed than comfortable in these movements.
What type of shoes should I wear?
- Wear shoes that are comfortable for you! Most people find flat shoes such as ballet flats, sneakers or tennis shoes most comfortable. Keep in mind that you may be asked to do certain functional movements at your appointment, especially if it is your first visit to the clinic, and these are easier to perform in comfortable flat shoes than in shoes with a heel.
- If you wear orthotic inserts or orthotic shoes, please bring them with you so that your chiropractor can assess them.
